Find Your Crafting Level: Beginner to Advanced

One of the questions I’m often asked is: “What level is this workshop? Do I need any experience?”

To make it a little bit simpler, I’ve created a Craft Workshop Skill Scale from 1–10. Whether you’ve never held a needle before or you’re ready to design your own patterns, this guide will help you find the perfect fit.

Craft Workshop Skill Scale (1–10)

1 – Absolute Beginner

  • No prior experience needed.

  • Simple, fun, and confidence-building.

  • Example: Learn to Use your Machines, Learn to Knit, Mandala Drawing.

2 – Beginner

  • Very basic tools or stitches.

  • Quick projects with instant results.

  • Example: All the Learn to... Sew classes, Fabric Mala Beads.

3 – Beginner Plus

  • Introduces a few new skills but still accessible.

  • Some repetition for practice.

  • Example: Coil Basket, Infinity Scarf.

4 – Advanced Beginner

  • Building on basics with slightly more detail.

  • May need to follow a short pattern or sequence.

  • Example: Japanese Knot Bag, Crochet Granny Square.

5 – Confident Beginner

  • Requires prior practice of basic stitches/techniques.

  • Projects take longer and need some focus.

  • Example: Panel Duster, Cross Stitch, Macrame Plant Hanger.

6 – Intermediate

  • Participants follow multi-step instructions independently.

  • More technical tools or shaping involved.

  • Participants expected to adapt patterns.

  • Example: Komebukuro, Sashiko.

8 – Advanced Intermediate

  • Mistakes are harder to fix.

  • Example: Cloth Pads, quilting blocks.

9 – Advanced

  • Mastery of multiple techniques at once.

  • High level of accuracy and creativity.

  • Example: couture sewing finishes, designing own patterns.

10 – Expert / Master Level

  • Professional standard of craftsmanship.

  • Often involves design, drafting, or innovation.

A Little Note from Me...

This scale is based on My Personal Experience teaching and making. I know that everyone learns differently and comes to workshops with their own unique skills. You might find something in Level 3 easy but a Level 2 project more challenging—and that’s completely normal. The most important thing is to give it a go and find joy in the making. If it's not for you now... it may be for you later.

Have Fun Crafting!!!
